10. Vikings (2013-2020)

This gritty historical drama chronicles the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary Viking warrior, as he rises to become king. Vikings deliver dramatic re-enactments of raids across medieval Europe while injecting mysticism and mythology. Compelling battles, family betrayals, and power struggles will satisfy any Game of Thrones cravings. Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video.

9. Lucifer (2016-2021)

Lucifer Morningstar leaves Hell to run a nightclub in Los Angeles and partners up with a detective to solve crimes. What’s not to love? Tom Ellis shines as the handsome devil unraveling mysteries while confronting his past. The supernatural procedural elements mesh with comedy, romance, and a journey of self-discovery. Binge this wild ride on Netflix.

8. Dark (2017-2020)

This mind-bending German sci-fi series unravels a complex mystery involving time travel, disappearing children, and four interconnected families hiding dark secrets in their small town. Dark lives up to its name with ominous cinematography and subjects weighed down by tragedy. Get ready for pitch-black humor too. Lose yourself in the labyrinth on Netflix.

7. The Witcher (2019- present )

Based on the fantasy novels, this epic stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter with supernatural powers facing down beasts and warlocks across a visually stunning medieval landscape. The Witcher provides perfect escapism with rich worldbuilding, cryptic prophecies, and timelines converging. Toss a coin to your Witcher on Netflix.

6. Sherlock (2010-2017)

Benedict Cumberbatch shines as Sherlock Holmes transported to modern-day London solving cases with military veteran Dr. Watson. Sharp writing and slick direction breathe new life into classic detective stories. Sherlock strides the line between eccentric genius and sociopath while unraveling thrilling mysteries. Elementary, my dear viewer - stream on HBO Max.

5. Mad Men (2007-2015)

Few series match Mad Men's style and melancholy. Set in the 1960s New York advertising world, the show immerses you in bygone martini-soaked office culture on the cusp of profound social change. Brilliant acting and writing unpack shifting gender roles and dissatisfaction beneath success. Flawless period details make it equally substantive and aesthetically mesmerizing. Revisit the mysterious Don Draper on Amazon Prime.

4. Money Heist (2017-2021)

This smash hit Spanish thriller revolves around an elaborate heist of Spain's Royal Mint as thieves adopt city names and wear red jumpsuits while hiding Dali masks. Tension builds through flashbacks unveiling how the Professor assembled his crew, full of outcasts with nowhere to turn. Money Heist delivers riveting action balanced with resonant themes of fighting oppressive systems. Stream this global sensation on Netflix.

3. Stranger Things (2016- present)

The Duffer Brothers crafted a captivating thriller soaked in 80s nostalgia, sci-fi wonder, and small-town warmth. Millie Bobby Brown shines as Eleven, linked to secret government experiments and a shadowy alternate dimension. Well-written characters grow in believable ways, anchored by the friendships between misfit teens. And it taps into universal themes of alienation and finding one’s tribe. We all could use more waffles and wise advice from Sheriff Hopper in this upside-down world. Transport back to Hawkins, Indiana on Netflix.

2. Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

A few transformation arcs rival that of Walter White going from terminal cancer patient to meth kingpin "Heisenberg.” Bryan Cranston delivered an all-time performance alongside Aaron Paul. Creator Vince Gilligan subverted expectations through bold storytelling teeming with tension. From bottles of acid burning through ceilings to Walt negotiating a man’s execution, the series ratcheted up stakes continually while remaining grounded in rich character development. Watch Walt's descent into darkness on Netflix.

1. Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

HBO’s sprawling fantasy saga brought George R.R. Martin’s novels to vivid life with Machiavellian power struggles, royal intrigue, and of course, dragons. Epic visuals, complex storytelling spanning continents, superb acting, and dark narrative twists made Thrones essential viewing. And it sparked debates heard around the world over who deserved to sit on the Iron Throne. Revisit the epic battles on HBO Max.

Conclusion

The shows that make my personal Mount Rushmore of television offers more than escapism - they open our minds, tug at our heartstrings, and bring joy. Of course, ranking greatness always stirs debate. Pop culture relevance, writing caliber, directorial flair, and rewatch value all factor into the criteria. While views may differ on the pecking order, these nuanced narratives showcase why television now rivals film as a storytelling medium. To me, the above series demonstrates the artistic heights the small screen can reach. I’d love to hear what are your top 10 greatest series! Let me know in the comments.
